A prenatal breastfeeding consultation might be the most overlooked item on your to-do list and one of the most valuable things you can do before your baby arrives! You’ve probably already thought through your nursery, the gadgets, and the gear. But preparing for how you’ll feed your baby? That part often gets put off until after birth, when you’re running on no sleep!
Here’s the thing: the early days of breastfeeding are often the hardest, and they happen right when you’re most exhausted. The parents who feel most grounded in those first days? They prepared ahead.
Most people think of lactation support as something you seek out after a problem shows up. But getting support before baby arrives means you walk into those first days already equipped with knowledge, confidence, and a relationship in place so you’re never second-guessing yourself or your baby.
As an infant feeding therapist and lactation consultant, I find that one visit before your due date can prevent so many of the early struggles that bring families to me in crisis mode. Not because something goes wrong, but because you already know what to expect, and have anticipatory guidance for what to do if and when things do get hard.
This is a personalized session that reviews your medical and pregnancy history, your goals, and what the first week with your baby are actually going to look like. You will leave the visit…
The sweet spot is your third trimester — close enough to your due date that everything stays fresh. If you’re 37 weeks or beyond (with your provider’s okay!), that’s a real bonus: we may be able to practice colostrum collection together right in the appointment. Colostrum is the nutrient-rich early milk your body is already producing, and learning to hand-express it before baby arrives can be incredibly helpful!
When we’ve already met before your baby arrives, support in that first week looks completely different.
Instead of reaching out to a stranger in a panic, you’re calling someone who already knows you. And because we’ve established that relationship, I’ll have your due date on my calendar so I can get you scheduled within that first week after baby is born, right when feeding is being established and support matters most!
Breastfeeding, as natural as it is, is also a learned skill for both you and your baby. Whether it’s your first or your third, it can look completely different each time. Having the right preparation and support in place before you need it can make all the difference.
If you’re in your third trimester, a prenatal consultation is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself and your baby. Book your consultation here!
